Iran, Russia in Agreement over Bolstering Naval Cooperation

“At this meeting, we talked about Iran-Russia maritime cooperation, and some good agreements came about,” General Bagheri said.

NOURNEWS - Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri said that an agreement has been reached with the Russian military officials to expand the two countries’ naval cooperation.

General Bagheri made the remarks on Wednesday after a meeting with Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Vice-Admiral Vladimir Lvovich Kasatonov in St. Petersburg.

“At this meeting, we talked about Iran-Russia maritime cooperation, and some good agreements came about,” he said.

Elaborating on the issues that were discussed during the meeting, General Bagheri pointed to various aspects of the two sides’ maritime cooperation, including Iran’s participation in Russia’s maritime drills, each side’s presence in the other’s military competitions, and mutual exchange of operational experiences.

General Bagheri said that the two sides also talked about the "meeting of the naval commanders of the Caspian littoral states and cooperation for the common Caspian maritime security, which according to the agreement of the five littoral states of the Caspian Sea should be provided by these countries only, and good agreements were reached."

The Russian official, for his part, hailed the countries’ increasing convergence, and the daily enrichment and betterment of their relations. 

Bagheri arrived in Russia on an official visit on Sunday.

So far during the stay, he has met with the country’s Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and his Russian counterpart Valery Vasilyevich Gerasimov.

General Bagheri and Shoigu in a meeting in Moscow on Tuesday agreed to expand mutual cooperation in defense and military fields.

During the meeting in the Russian capital, the top Iranian and Russian generals explored avenues for bolstering and reinvigorating mutual cooperation in the defense field.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed the military agreement that is going to be signed soon.

In a relevant development on Monday, General Bagheri announced that Iran-Russia Joint Military Commission will convene in three months from now.

General Bagheri made the remarks in a joint press conference after meeting with Gerasimov.

"In the meeting of the Iran-Russia Joint Commission, mutual cooperation in defensive, security, and academic fields will be on the agenda and reviewed," he reiterated.

General Bagheri said that in his meeting with General Gerasimov, cooperation between the armed forces of Iran and Russia, and a contract on cooperation in this field were discussed.
