Deadly clashes during food aid distribution in Afghanistan / 7 killed, 14 wounded

According to a local member of the Afghan parliament, seven people were killed and 14 others were injured in clashes with police in Ghour province over unfair food distribution.

NOURNEWS- People who have protested against the dissatisfaction with the way food is distributed say that the authorities are distributing these donations more for the benefit of influential people.

A spokesman for the governor of Ghour province said police had opened fire after about 300 protesters began throwing stones, setting fires and trying to enter the governor's house.

He also stated that the number of casualties in these clashes was only two and five wounded, while denying that the distribution of food was unfair, adding that some of the wounded were also police officers.

Ahmad Qureshi, executive director of the Afghan Journalists' Center, said that among those killed was Ahmad Navid Khan, a local radio volunteer presenter who was sitting in his shop around the scene of the clash when he was shot in the head.

Shahrzad Akbar, head of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC), said the commission was investigating "reports of police shootings of protesters."

The Afghan government has been distributing food aid across the country for some time, as restrictions on coping with coronavirus have led to job losses and rising food prices.

Meanwhile, Shahrzad Akbar says that the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has faced a wave of public complaints over the government's unfair distribution of aid.

He said the commission had received repeated complaints from the public that those receiving the donations were not people in need, but people in contact with local officials. However, Akbar acknowledged that he could not say in which area.

According to Reuters, the outbreak of the new coronavirus in Afghanistan has so far killed 4,033 people and killed 115 others.
