UNSC did not adopt the resolution to permanently lift sanctions against Iran

The United Nations Security Council has not adopted the draft resolution by South Korea, as the rotating president of the UNSC, on lifting sanctions against Iran permanently.

The draft resolution by South Korea, as the president of the UN Security Council for September), was voted on Friday morning local time (New York) in accordance with Clause 11 of Resolution 2231 (2015).

This resolution received only four votes in favor out of the 15 votes of the UN Security Council members, with 9 countries voting against and 2 countries abstaining.

Any resolution for adoption in the UN Security Council requires 9 votes from this 15-member council.

As predicted, the aforementioned resolution failed to obtain the necessary votes but was put to a vote under pressure from the United States and three European countries to pressure Iran before the end of the 30-day deadline.

In reality, the UN Security Council failed to adopt a draft resolution aimed at preventing the swift return of sanctions against Iran that had been terminated under the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, known as the JCPOA.

This resolution sought to maintain the termination of sanctions against Iran but did not obtain the required 9 votes.

Only China, Russia, Pakistan, and Algeria voted in favor of the mentioned resolution for the continuation of the termination of sanctions against Iran.

Nine countries—Britain, France, the United States, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia—voted against, while two countries, Guyana and South Korea, abstained.
