Grossi: Iran does not have nuclear weapons

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said: “To avoid any misunderstanding, I emphasize: Iran does not have nuclear weapons.”

Nournews: The Director General of the IAEA emphasized in a statement: “To avoid any misunderstanding, I emphasize: Iran does not have nuclear weapons.”

Rafael Grossi, Director General of the IAEA, spoke with the Argentine media on Saturday evening, discussing various issues including Iran’s nuclear program and recent threats by U.S. President Donald Trump against Iran.

In part of his interview with Argentina’s La Nacion network, Grossi stressed: “To avoid any misunderstanding, I emphasize: Iran does not have nuclear weapons.”

Previously, Grossi had mentioned his possible plan to visit Iran in April. In a political statement, he claimed: “Iran does not have nuclear weapons, but it has acquired many of the components and pieces of the puzzle necessary to build one.”

He alleged: “Iran has produced the necessary amount of nuclear material to make a nuclear bomb. To build a bomb or a nuclear warhead, you need many components. But the most important element, the one that gives the bomb its destructive power, is enriched uranium.”

Referring to Iran's enriched uranium stockpile, the IAEA chief claimed: “I don’t want to get too technical, but Iran has enough enriched uranium to make six or seven nuclear weapons. But once again, I emphasize: Iran does not currently have nuclear weapons.”

He also commented on Trump’s recent letter and threats to Iran, stating: “In recent days, we’ve seen a letter from Trump sent to Iran’s leader, and of course, threats against Iran, including bombing the country. Trump also spoke of a two-month window to reach a new agreement.”

Grossi added: “In my view, we are at a moment where we need to move forward. Yesterday, upon arriving in Buenos Aires, I spoke with Iran’s Foreign Minister (Seyed Abbas Araghchi) and we agreed that I will travel to Iran in the coming weeks.”

He continued: “In my conversation with the Iranian Foreign Minister, we also agreed that Iran should clarify as soon as possible the matters that have remained ambiguous, so that we can reduce the possibility of any confrontation. Any confrontation would be devastating.”
