Iran seizes ship with 1mn liters of smuggled oil in Persian Gulf

Iranian border police have seized a ship carrying one million liters of smuggled oil in the waters of the Persian Gulf.

The operation on Tuesday was conducted in Hormozgan Province after authorities received intelligence on fuel smuggling activities.

Six suspects were arrested and handed over to judicial authorities.

Iran, home to some of the world's cheapest fuel due to government subsidies, has long faced challenges with fuel smuggling, particularly in its southern maritime borders.

The significant price difference between Iranian fuel and that of neighboring countries has made fuel smuggling a lucrative illegal trade.

In recent years, Iranian authorities have intensified efforts to curb fuel smuggling.

In 2022, the Iranian Navy intercepted a foreign ship transporting 11 million liters of smuggled fuel.
