Attempting to manage domestic crises
Upon returning to the White House, Trump has faced numerous challenges. On one hand, his immigration policies, and on the other, initial failures in economic and trade policies, including tariffs, have weakened his position within the US. In these circumstances, focusing on external threats, especially from Iran, can be used as a tool to divert public attention and create cohesion among Republican supporters. Historical experience shows that US presidents, in times of domestic crisis, resort to foreign policies and displays of military might to divert attention from internal problems.
Continuing maximum pressure strategy
Trump, in his new term, continues his predecessor's policy of maximum pressure against Iran. The CPAC conference and the display of the alleged Iranian drone can be analyzed within this framework. With the intensification of anti-Iran measures such as new sanctions, claims of arms shipments to Yemen, and repeated accusations about Iran's role in the Ukraine war, the primary goal of these policies is to create an international consensus to increase pressure on Iran and prevent any sanctions relief. Additionally, these actions can discourage some countries from engaging in trade and military cooperation with Iran.
Supporting the Israeli regime
Trump, from the beginning of his new term, has aligned his policies strongly with the interests of the Israeli regime. These policies include lifting restrictions on arms exports to Israel and supporting settlements in the West Bank. In a situation where this regime faces domestic crises and international challenges, promoting Iranophobia can serve as a tool to justify Israel's actions and garner more support. On the other hand, this policy allows Trump to maintain the support of pro-Israel lobbies in the US.
Containing Iran's regional role
One of the primary goals of the US's anti-Iran policies is to limit Iran's regional role. In this regard, propaganda displays like the one at CPAC can lay the groundwork for subsequent actions, including diplomatic pressures, new sanctions, and even limited military actions. Simultaneously, weakening the Axis of Resistance by increasing pressure on Lebanon, Iraq, and Syria is on the agenda. These actions are taking place while Iran remains a key player in regional equations.
This year's CPAC conference revealed that Republicans, especially Trump, have aligned their policies based on continuing pressure on Iran and exploiting the atmosphere of Iranophobia internationally. However, past experience shows that such displays usually do not lead to the desired outcome, as in addition to the lack of full cooperation from US allies, Iran's ability to confront these strategies has also increased. Continuing such policies will not only fail to change Iran's behavior but could also deepen the rift between the US and some of its allies who seek to reduce tensions in the region.
