Is the new respiratory virus epidemic like COVID-19?

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) can cause severe respiratory diseases among vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people with weak immune systems, and its outbreak has caused global concerns.

Nournews: Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) was first discovered in 2001 by scientists from the Netherlands. The virus, which is part of the Paramyxovirus family, is one of the most important causes of respiratory diseases.

Recently, reports about the massive outbreak of the virus in China have evoked global concerns regarding its spread and severity. HMPV spreads quickly through close contact and contact with contaminated surfaces and can particularly cause severe respiratory diseases among vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, people with current respiratory diseases, and those with weak immune systems.

What is HMPV?
It is a respiratory virus that affects the upper and lower respiratory systems. The virus has an incubation period of between 3 and 6 days and causes symptoms such as fever, a runny nose, and, in severe cases, shortness of breath. The virus is very similar to Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and can cause similar severe infections in the lungs and bronchi. Although many people contract the virus before the age of 5, it is possible to get the virus again, but with milder symptoms.

Vulnerable groups and effects of the disease
Young children, the elderly, people with underlying diseases, and those with weak immune systems are among the vulnerable groups. Among them, the virus can cause severe respiratory diseases such as bronchiolitis, pneumonia, severe asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In addition, otitis media infection may occur. Severe cases may require hospitalization.

Speed and geography of virus transmission
Currently, there are reports of the massive outbreak of the virus in China and some other countries. Although the pace of the virus outbreak is still unknown in different countries, global concerns about its severity and transmission speed are rising. The situation is reminiscent of the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, which rapidly spread to all countries around the world.

Comparing the new virus with COVID-19
HMPV has similar symptoms to COVID-19, including fever, coughing, and shortness of breath. However, COVID-19 caused more social and hygienic crises compared to the new virus due to its rapid transmission rate and more massive effects on the global health system. There is no precise and updated data on the outbreak of HMPV in Iran. However, given its similarities with other respiratory viruses such as RSV, the virus could pose challenges for Iran as well.

How to prevent and control the virus
To prevent the virus, observing hygienic measures such as handwashing, maintaining social distance, and disinfecting contaminated surfaces is recommended. Since there is no vaccine for HMPV, controlling the outbreak depends on individuals' preventive behavior and the rapid management of the disease in case of illness.
