Why was Carter's era one of the most controversial periods of American presidency?

NOURNEWS – Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, was born on October 1, 1924, and passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100. His presidency (1977-1981) coincided with significant global events, including the Iranian Islamic Revolution, which had profound effects on Iran-US relations and American foreign policy.

James Earl Carter Jr., known as Jimmy Carter, was born in Plains, Georgia, and passed away at the age of 100. After graduating from the Naval Academy, he served in the Navy for a few years before returning to his hometown to pursue farming and politics. In 1970, he was elected Governor of Georgia, implementing significant social and political reforms that made him a nationally recognized figure. These achievements paved the way for his victory in the 1976 presidential election.

Carter's presidency and the Iranian Islamic Revolution

Carter, running on the platform of "Honesty in Government," defeated Republican candidate Gerald Ford in the 1976 election. His presidency (1977-1981) coincided with significant global events, including the Iranian Islamic Revolution, which had profound effects on Iran-US relations and American foreign policy.

The Islamic Revolution in 1979 led to the fall of the Iranian monarchy and the establishment of the Islamic Republic. The Shah of Iran, a close ally of the United States, attempted reforms with Carter's support, but widespread popular dissatisfaction and the leadership of Imam Khomeini led to the revolution's success.

Following the revolution, Iran-US relations became highly strained. In the same year, a group of students following Imam Khomeini seized the US Embassy in Tehran and held 52 American diplomats hostage for 444 days. Carter's efforts to free the hostages, including the failed "Delta" operation in the Tabas Desert, severely damaged his reputation. This crisis was one of the main reasons for his defeat in the 1980 election.

Domestic and foreign policies

Despite the challenges associated with Iran, the Carter presidency was also marked by significant actions.

Due to Jimmy Carter's initiatives in both domestic and foreign policy, some regard him as one of the most influential political and social figures of the twentieth century.

Camp David Accords (1978): His successful mediation between Egypt and Israel led to the signing of a lasting peace treaty between the two countries.

Support for Human Rights: In his foreign policy, Carter prioritized human rights, earning a reputation for this focus.

Addressing the Energy Crisis: He implemented policies aimed at reducing America's dependence on foreign oil, striving to manage the energy crisis of the 1970s.

Challenges and criticisms

Jimmy Carter's presidency was marked by economic problems, including recession and inflation, which diminished public confidence in his administration. Additionally, his failure to effectively manage the Iran hostage crisis stands out as one of the major criticisms of his record.

Humanitarian activities after presidency

After leaving the White House, Carter became one of the most active former presidents in U.S. history. He established the Carter Center and undertook significant work in areas such as monitoring free elections, disease reduction, and advocating for human rights. In 2002, in recognition of these efforts, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Public mourning following Jimmy Carter's passing

With the passing of Jimmy Carter on December 29, 2024, President Joe Biden declared a day of public mourning. Plus, American flags will be flown at half-staff for 30 days. A formal memorial service will be held on January 9, 2025.
