US imposes new sanctions on Iran's oil and gas exports

The US Treasury Department announced Wednesday that it has imposed sanctions on more than a dozen companies and vessels for their role in transporting Iranian crude oil and petroleum products to Syria and East Asia.

Four ships owned by the Syrian Maritime Company, managed by brothers Abdul Jalil Mallah and his brother, Luay al-Mallah, are among those sanctioned.

Abdul Jalil Mallah was previously sanctioned by the US in 2021, and his brother was added to the sanctions list on Wednesday.

The United States Department of the Treasury alleged that the brothers "continue to use their shipping empire to support Iranian and Iranian proxy actions."

Bradley T. Smith, acting under secretary of the Treasury for terrorism and financial intelligence, said in a statement that Iran continues to illicitly sell its oil and petroleum products through the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Hezbollah.
