Iranian-origin Sarah Al Amiri appointed as UAE's Minister of Education

Sarah Al Amiri, an Iranian-origin scientist and technologist, was appointed as the new Minister of Education of the United Arab Emirates. The announcement was made by Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, on his official social media account on Sunday.

"Today, we announce the integration of the Emirates Schools Establishment (ESE) and the Federal Agency of Early Education with the Ministry of Education and the appointment of Sarah Al Amiri as the UAE's Minister of Education," Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid tweeted.

Al Amiri, who previously served as the Chairwoman of the UAE Space Agency and the Emirates Scientists Council, has a notable background in the fields of science and technology.

Of Baluch descent, Sarah Al Amiri was born in Iran before her family emigrated to the UAE. She studied computer science at the American University of Sharjah, earning bachelor's and master's degrees. She started her career in the field of space technology at the Emirates Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, where she worked as a program engineer on the UAE’s first satellites, Dubai Sat-1 and Dubai Sat-2. In 2016, she was appointed as the head of the Emirates Scientist Council and she was appointed as the chairperson of the UAE Council for the Fourth Industrial Revolution in 2018. In 2022, she was appointed as Minister of State for Public Education and Future Technology and Chair of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Schools Establishment.

The new minister's appointment underscores the UAE's commitment to promoting education and innovation, with Al Amiri bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to the role.
