Damascus crime and Iran's strategic decisions

Iran's National Security Council reacts to recent Zionist regime's crime in Damascus

NOURNEWS – Political and security developments in the coming days and weeks will shed further light on decisions made by the country's highest security body and how the United States responds to the recent crime by the Zionist regime acting as Washington's proxy army in the region.

On April 1, the Zionist regime struck a new crime, a clear violation of international protocols and the inviolability of diplomatic premises, targeting the Consulate of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Damascus, the capital of Syria, resulting in the martyrdom of seven Iranian military advisors, including Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi and his deputy, Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, high-ranking commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

While the reasons behind the Zionist regime's perpetration of this crime may be understandable given the unprecedented deadlock the regime has faced domestically and internationally since October 7 and Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, it cannot be ignored how this event might affect Iran's confrontation with the unforgivable audacity of this regime.

Although so far, our country's authorities, including the Iranian president and the head of the National Security Council, have only emphasized not leaving the recent crime by the Zionist regime unanswered, the announcement of the holding of an emergency meeting of this council last night and the adoption of relevant decisions regarding the attack on Iran's consulate in Damascus indicate that our country's response to this event has been swift and based on consensus at the highest level of decision-making on national security issues.

The statement from the council emphasized that the meeting was held at 9 p.m. on Monday night, just four hours after the Zionist regime's attack on our country's consulate in Damascus, indicating that decision-making on how to respond to this event is among the top priorities of national security.

Shortly after the meeting of the National Security Council, Iran submitted a letter to the UN Security Council regarding the Israeli regime's attack on Iran's consulate in Damascus, delivered by ambassador and deputy permanent representative of Iran to the UN.

In this letter, Iran emphasized that the occupying regime of Israel has carried out a heinous and detestable terrorist attack against diplomatic premises of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Syria.

Iran has called on the UN Security Council to take necessary actions, including holding an immediate session to address this egregious violation and prevent future aggressive actions that jeopardize the security and safety of diplomatic missions, and to ensure swift accountability for those responsible for such criminal acts.

The letter underscored that the Zionist regime bears full responsibility for the consequences of such terrorist crimes, and Iran reserves its legitimate right under international law and the United Nations Charter to respond decisively to such terrorist acts.

Following our country's swift action in referring the Zionist regime's attack on our consulate in Damascus, Russia's first deputy envoy to the UN announced that an emergency Security Council session on Israel's attack on Iran's consulate in Syria would be held shortly.

The follow-up decisions made by the National Security Council of our country continued overnight and into this morning, as Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, our country's foreign minister, announced on his personal page on the social network X (Twitter); Swiss chargé d'affaires in the absence of the ambassador, summoned the Foreign Ministry this morning and an important message was sent to the United States as the supporter of the Zionist regime. The US must be held accountable.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry’s meaningful action in sending an important message to the US demonstrates that although the White House may appear unaware of the Zionist regime's decision to commit this crime, from the perspective of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Washington's role as the primary supporter of the Zionist regime in carrying out the recent crime is certain, and the US must be prepared for the repercussions of this action.

Certainly, political and security developments in the coming days and weeks will clarify the dimensions of decisions made by the highest security body of the country, and the clarity of the United States' response to the recent crime of the Zionist regime, which acts as Washington's proxy army in the region, will become more apparent.
