Nournews: Following the 3-day visit of the FAO technical board to Kerman Province, Iranian pistachios successfully passed the laboratory tests related to pollutants and aflatoxin.
In line with improving export standards of Iranian pistachios and boosting laboratory capabilities to ensure the quality of this strategic Iranian product, FAO sent a technical board to Kerman Province to take samples and carry out tests related to identifying pollutants in Iran’s pistachios.
The 3-day visit was held in collaboration with Iran’s Ministry of Agricultural Jihad as part of a joint project between FAO and the Ministry of Agricultural Jihad. The project aims to improve the quality of Iranian pistachio production and increase its export through integrated management.
The FAO board of experts focused on evaluating sampling methods and pistachio analysis to control aflatoxin, one of the most important toxins caused by fungi.
Aflatoxin can have very negative effects on people’s health. In international markets, meeting the precise standards regarding this issue is of high importance.
FAO members investigated the sampling process and quality management systems of Iranian pistachios used for both domestic consumption and export. Their evaluations confirmed that Iranian pistachios are produced in accordance with global standards.
FAO experts held two workshops for laboratory professionals and traders. During these workshops, the best methods for sampling, identifying aflatoxin, and achieving better laboratory results were discussed.
The second workshop was held in collaboration with the Iranian Pistachio Research Center for farmers and agricultural experts in Kerman, Rafsanjan, and Sirjan. During this workshop, the best techniques for irrigation, soil management, and pest control were taught.
